Project Summary

Quest for Democracy in Saudi Arabia Conference will be held on May 2nd, 2024 in Washington D.C. The conference is revolves around the principles of the “People’s Vision for Reform”, an initiative led by Saudi activists, academics and intellectuals. This vision is founded on several demands for reform previously articulated by Saudi civil society leaders who have faced repression, imprisonment and prosecution by authorities because of their human rights and social justice activism. By bringing gathering leading experts, scholars, and activists from diverse sociopolitical backgrounds, the conference aim to provide a platform for exploring the idea of reform within authoritarian regimes. It also seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas and strategies that will ultimately lead to tangible next steps in the Quest for Democracy in Saudi Arabia.

Goals

  1. Building a coalition for reforms and peace in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.
  2. Shedding light on the humanitarian crisis surrounding the political imprisonment of numerous intellectuals and activists.
  3. Taking an in-depth look into the academic and scholarly writings of reforms in Saudi Arabia.

Approach

The conference will be divided into four discussion panels, or tracks, focusing on:

  1. A General Perception of Democracy in Saudi Arabia.
  2. International Political Relations and their Impact on Local Democracy.
  3. Economic and Political Reforms.
  4. Human Rights in Saudi Arabia

Additionally, the conference will feature keynote speakers who actively work, write and advocate for democratic reform in other countries in the (Arab) world.
